Electra, an aircraft company that grew out of an MIT graduate class project, is planning an $850 million manufacturing expansion in Ohio expected to create nearly 2,000 jobs. The company is developing a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft designed to take off and land on runways as short as 150 feet—about half the length of a soccer field. That capability could bring air travel closer to communities far from major airports, according to MIT.
The aircraft combines a gas-powered generator, batteries, and eight electric motors. The EL9 is designed to cruise at about 200 mph, with a range of up to roughly 1,200 miles, while requiring far less runway space and producing less noise than conventional aircraft. Electra says the technology is particularly suited to regional trips, potentially offering a faster and more convenient alternative to driving or conventional commercial flights.
EL9 Targets the Last Tactical Mile
Electra’s defense business is developing the EL9 Ultra-STOL, a hybrid-electric aircraft designed to take off and land in as little as 150 feet without traditional infrastructure. It is aimed at military missions including tactical logistics, medical evacuation, maritime operations, and special missions, while offering up to 70% lower operating costs than traditional VTOL aircraft.
From Prototype to Mass Production
Electra has already tested its two-seat EL2 prototype through more than 200 flights. The company plans to begin construction of its 96-acre Ohio manufacturing facility next year, with an initial production capacity of 400 aircraft annually and an eventual target of about 800.
Electra has also signed an MOU with the City of Helsinki and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences to study using its Ultra Short aircraft for faster regional travel between Helsinki and Tallinn, which are about 80 kilometers apart. The feasibility study will examine passenger demand, infrastructure, operating costs, regulations, and potential business models, with findings expected by the end of 2026. Electra also says a future flight demonstration could be considered, subject to approvals.
