The U.S. Department of Labor’s August 20, 2026, Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims report shows that new unemployment claims declined modestly. Initial claims for the week ending August 15 totaled 206,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 212,000. However, the four-week moving average increased to 204,000, suggesting that unemployment claims have remained relatively stable in recent weeks.
The number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits increased slightly. Insured unemployment reached 1.799 million for the week ending August 8, up 18,000 from the previous week, while the insured unemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.2%. Despite this increase, both initial and continuing claims remained below their levels from the same period in 2025.
Overall, the report suggests that the labor market remains relatively stable. New layoffs remain moderate, but the increase in continuing unemployment claims may indicate that some unemployed workers are taking longer to find new jobs. Rhode Island’s insured unemployment rate was 2.2%, among the higher rates reported by states.
