QatarEnergy is expected to become the world’s largest buyer of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2033, securing access to approximately 23.7 million tonnes annually through new agreements and its stake in the Golden Pass LNG project in Texas. The move comes as the war in the Middle East disrupts Qatar’s exports and limits shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Financial Times, the additional U.S. LNG will be resold to international customers rather than shipped to Qatar, with supplies expected to become available from 2030. The strategy aims to diversify Qatar’s supply portfolio, strengthen its global trading position, and reinforce its reputation as a reliable energy supplier.
