Republican lawmakers are increasingly calling for a U.S. ban on diesel exports as diesel prices reach record levels. The national average recently reached about $6.51 per gallon, putting pressure on farmers, truckers, and other businesses that rely heavily on diesel.
Lawmakers including Chuck Grassley, Ashley Hinson, and Dan Sullivan have urged the administration to consider restricting exports so more diesel remains in the United States, according to Bloomberg. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has also said he is open to exploring the idea.
Supporters argue that keeping more fuel at home could help reduce domestic prices. However, the oil industry and some administration officials oppose the idea, arguing that an export ban could disrupt global markets, reduce refinery production, and potentially raise prices in parts of the U.S. that depend on imported fuel.
