China has launched an aggressive government-backed effort to reduce its reliance on US semiconductor technology and build a self-sufficient artificial intelligence (AI) chip industry. Led by Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, the initiative has centered on companies such as Huawei, which has made significant progress in developing domestic AI chips and expanding China’s chip production despite US export restrictions, according to The Wall Street Journal.
China has narrowed its dependence on foreign AI chips and is investing heavily across the semiconductor supply chain. However, the country still trails the United States in advanced chip technology and manufacturing capacity. While Huawei and other Chinese firms have developed innovative workarounds to improve chip performance, production constraints and a technology gap with companies such as Nvidia remain major challenges.
