A Bloomberg report says the United States is quietly shifting strategy in the Strait of Hormuz to improve maritime security after abandoning a more public escort plan known as “Project Freedom.”
Instead of openly deploying naval escorts, US forces are now coordinating discreetly with commercial shipping companies, helping vessels transit the strait in lower-profile ways. Ships are reportedly adjusting routes—such as hugging the Omani coast—and in some cases turning off tracking systems to reduce the risk of Iranian attacks, while US forces provide support when needed.
The approach is intended to avoid escalating tensions with Iran while still keeping the vital oil shipping route open after months of disruption. It reflects a broader move from high-visibility military intervention toward quieter coordination and risk management in a highly volatile maritime corridor.
