Within the recent release of Cato Institute's Human Freedom Index 2022 lies a warning—global freedom is in sharp decline. Cato's scholars report: The HFI is the most comprehensive freedom index so far created for a globally meaningful set of countries and jurisdictions representing 98.1 percent of the world’s population. The HFI covers 165 jurisdictions for 2020, the most recent year for which sufficient data are available. The index ranks jurisdictions beginning in 2000, the earliest year for which a robust enough index could be produced. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 represents more … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Adventure to Fenway Park for a Winter Classic
OK, you know Your Survival Guy likes to hunker down in his cave for the winter. But on occasion, I’ll venture out amongst the throngs for an adventure. This is where I found myself Monday with family and friends for the National Hockey League’s outdoor Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in Boston, MA. The Winter Classic is the NHL’s mid-season Super Bowl, if you will, without the trophy but absolutely with the fanfare, including the most famous goal scorer in Bruins history, Bobby Orr dropping/pitching the first puck, Bell Biv DeVoe singing the … [Read more...]
GRID TERRORISM: It Can Happen to Anyone
You have read the disturbing reports about terrorists who targeted power stations in North Carolina, Washington, and Oregon recently. The alarming part of this story, according to Mayor Carol Haney of South Pines, NC, is that it could happen to anyone. Frank Morris reports for NPR: "This beautiful part of the world gets sabotaged," said Haney. "So, it could happen to anyone. And that's probably the most frightening for everyone– that this could happen to anyone." It could. Across the United States some 55,000 electrical substations are humming right now, mostly transforming high voltage … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy’s Christmas at Fort Wilderness
When I was a kid, we traveled across the country in a 21-foot Winnebago Brave (yes, we were). When I think about how we celebrated Christmas early to spend Christmas day at Fort Wilderness in Walt Disney World, it brings a smile to my face. Writing to you from New England, where snow has been slow to catch on, it’s nice thinking about those more tropical memories. Which brings me to investing. Memories don’t always happen without a plan. You invest in your family, and you believe that it will pay off down the road. That’s certainly been the case for my parents, who put my sister and me … [Read more...]
BE PREPARED: Army Responds to Terrorist Attack Near Fort Bragg
The Army is working to respond to the results of a terrorist attack on a power station near Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Many soldiers and their families have been affected, and the power outages could last for some time. Residents of Moore County, including the Army personnel there, are facing a cash-only economy, with electric payments systems knocked out, and many are relying on local assistance for food and water. They could be facing days without electricity. The Army Times reports: Tens of thousands of people braced for days without electricity in a North Carolina county, which … [Read more...]
Successful GOP Governor Explains the Party’s Failure to Take the Senate
There have already been many postmortems of the 2022 midterm elections, but this one from New Hampshire's successful governor Chris Sununu, who was just reelected to his fourth term as the chief executive of the Live Free or Die state, has an idea about why GOP efforts fell short of initial expectations. He recently told an interviewer: As for why his party was far less successful than anyone had anticipated, Sununu was candid. “People just didn’t have any faith that the Republicans running for the federal seats were going to be the ones to fix the policies like inflation concerns that were … [Read more...]
Democrats Don’t Want You to Read about the Crime in Their Cities
You have read here many times about the crime plaguing America's big blue cities. That crime has driven many big city residents to look for a better America in places like Florida, Texas, and other states where politicians care more about citizens than they do about criminals. The states and cities where Democrats appear to govern with the best interests of criminals in mind have watched as hard working residents have fled in droves. So it isn't surprising to read in the NY Post that Democrats are attacking news outlets that report on their failures. The Post's editorial board writes: The … [Read more...]
Jewel of the North
You know Your Survival Guy loves New Hampshire. Besides spending a lot of time in the Granite State, New Hampshire topped my 2022 list of Super States. Though Your Survival Guy spends most of his time in the White Mountains, New Hampshire's south is endowed with one of America's "best-run cities" in Nashua. According to WalletHub, Nashua is America's fourth best-run city. Adama McCann writes for WalletHub: The past year has been a true test of the effectiveness of local leadership. City leaders have had to facilitate the transition from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic back to a state much … [Read more...]
“The Heat Isn’t Working Upstairs”
Your Survival Guy returned home from work yesterday (yes, going to the office is still a thing) to: “The heat isn’t working upstairs.” I’ll let you guess who said it, considering we’re now empty nesters. If our dog could talk, his eyes were saying, “You might want to go back to work.” On the coldest day of the year (so far), it was the second time we turned on the heat or tried to this year. Which brings me to another note to self: “When the AC wasn’t working a couple of months ago, maybe that was a good time to get the heating system checked out. Just saying.” Action Line: Look, I’m … [Read more...]
