Your Survival Guy returned home from work yesterday (yes, going to the office is still a thing) to: “The heat isn’t working upstairs.” I’ll let you guess who said it, considering we’re now empty nesters. If our dog could talk, his eyes were saying, “You might want to go back to work.” On the coldest day of the year (so far), it was the second time we turned on the heat or tried to this year. Which brings me to another note to self: “When the AC wasn’t working a couple of months ago, maybe that was a good time to get the heating system checked out. Just saying.” Action Line: Look, I’m … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy in Paris: A Sunday Lunch to Love
OK, where is Your Survival Guy’s favorite lunch in Paris? Glad you asked. Answer: the next one. But, seriously, what makes a great lunch, great? One measure is when you’re back home, you want to replicate some of those flavors and memories that made it special. La Fontaine de Mars is where we eat Sunday lunch. We own their pink and red checkered cloth napkins as a reminder—when they’re draped over our kitchen island, everyone knows we’re in for a special time. Yes, it’s possible to be in Paris from the comfort of your home. I take that trip often. Walking to La Fontaine de Mars from Le … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: GNMA, L’Ami Louis, and You
Happy Friday. I want you to go to the most controversial restaurant in all of Paris. But first, a bit of business. As you know, Your Survival Guy isn’t big on selling positions. My default position is to hold forever. With that said, it doesn’t mean I operate with my head in the sand, far from it. There are times when selling for tax purposes makes sense—to realize a loss and get back into something similar. That’s a move that could make sense for you if you hold Vanguard GNMA at a loss in a taxable account. If you hold it in an IRA, then stick it out. If you want to talk, let me … [Read more...]
Make Your State Florida
Lee Zeldin just might make New York great again. He, like other Republican candidates, sees why Floridians love Florida. As he gains in the polls, Kathy Hochul has called in the Democrat big guns (more like cap guns) in Hillary and Kamala to shore up the base. Is it too little too late, as a big Red Wave crests over big blue cities? There’s plenty of blame to go around. In New York state, the Second Amendment is absolutely on the ballot after the recent Supreme Court ruling was trashed by the state, including Hochul, who insulted gun owners with her new regulations. In listening to … [Read more...]
Guess What Your Survival Got for an Early Christmas Present
Happy Monday from Your Survival Guy. Hope you had a great weekend. For us, it felt like Christmas came early on Friday when our kids visited home from school. Something tells me it wasn’t just because they “missed” us while we were in Paris. I’d like to think they did. They tell us they did. A part of me wants to think they wanted to spend quality time together. But I can imagine the texts between them: “weekend?” “Not much…” “Home? Bet M/D brought stuff home for us from Paris” “K” What’s hard about when your kids go away to school is that they come back to visit (that’s the … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: Arriving in Style at Le Bristol Hotel, Paris
OK, so you want to go to Paris? Your Survival Guy is back from another three-week research trip, the second this year, and I have plenty to report. For one, Paris is open for business, big time, as travelers from around the world, (sans China) are moving about the country. As for Paris itself, especially in the service/tourism industry, it’s at maximum capacity based on the sheer demand post-Covid and lack of labor supply. There’s still a hangover from lockdowns and the reluctance of workers—still living off government payouts—to get back to work. Sound familiar? Now, you didn’t come … [Read more...]
FISCALLY FIT: Who Are America’s Top Performing Governors?
You may be wondering, after the last two decades, if there is anywhere left in America where fiscal conservatism remains important. The federal budget has ballooned out to Banana Republic-like proportions. It turns out there are still some pockets of America where governors put a priority on maintaining the financial strength of their states. At the Cato Institute, Chris Edwards and Ilana Blumsack have ranked America's governors based on their fiscal performance. They write: The nation’s economy was damaged by the pandemic in 2020, but it bounced back strongly and grew until the end of 2021. … [Read more...]
France Working Hard to Recover from COVID Lockdowns
Good morning from Beaune. Your Survival Guy is on the last leg of a three-week research trip through Paris/Beaune. The word on the ground is that France is back in business, but it’s been a long pull through Covid. Now everyone’s trying to make up for the lost time. The service industry is still struggling to find workers and to balance the needs of workers who are burnt out. It is an Atlas Shrugged-like struggle between working and throwing in the towel and just not coming back to work. Sound familiar? Louis Jadot is always a good choice. Your Survival Guy … [Read more...]

What You Can Learn from the Making of The Godfather
OK, you know how I feel about your lazy cash sitting on your couch eating all your food and doing nothing—not providing—not pulling his weight for the family. Lazy Cash Wandering Docks at Newport Boat Show The show “The Offer” is now streaming on Paramount+. It’s about the making of the movie The Godfather, and in it you see how much work went into getting Mario Puzo’s story onto the big screen—a monumental effort. I can’t wait to watch the show’s conclusion tonight. What’s Your Survival Guy Doing with His Cash? You don’t need to see the show to know what happens when someone … [Read more...]
