India’s first indigenously built 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam has reached criticality, marking the start of a self-sustaining nuclear reaction, according to Bloomberg.
The reactor produces more fuel than it consumes, advancing India’s three-stage nuclear strategy and long-term energy security, making the country one of the few countries with commercial-scale fast-breeder technology.
India Today reports the indigenously designed and built reactor, capable of producing more fissile fuel than it consumes, is a key part of India’s three‑stage nuclear strategy and advances the nation toward long‑term energy security and the eventual use of its vast thorium reserves.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the achievement as a “defining step” in India’s nuclear journey, highlighting its significance for scientific capability and future power generation.
