The July 2026 Challenger, Gray & Christmas report showed that US employers announced 62,075 job cuts, up 35% from June’s 45,849 and nearly 140% higher than July 2025. Year-to-date announced layoffs reached 505,679, about 14% higher than the same period in 2025, signaling that companies are becoming more cautious about hiring amid economic uncertainty.
The technology sector announced the most layoffs in July with 13,037 job cuts. Employers cited artificial intelligence, restructuring, and economic conditions as the primary reasons for workforce reductions, while hiring plans remained subdued. The report suggests businesses continue to streamline operations and invest in automation even as the overall labor market remains relatively resilient.
