The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved Constellation Energy’s request to transfer transmission rights from its Eddystone plant to the Crane nuclear facility (formerly Three Mile Island Unit 1), clearing a key hurdle for its planned restart. The decision allows 760 MW of Capacity Interconnection Rights to be shifted, improving the plant’s ability to deliver power to the PJM grid despite pending transmission constraints.
The move supports Constellation’s $1.6 billion effort to restart the 835 MW Crane reactor by potentially enabling fuller power delivery ahead of major grid upgrades now expected around 2030, reports Utility Dive. The approval follows objections from PJM’s market monitor but was deemed consistent with regulatory criteria by FERC.
The Crane restart is also backed by a long-term agreement to supply power to Microsoft’s data centers, highlighting growing demand from large technology users. Constellation says improving deliverability is critical to avoid operating the plant below optimal output, which could affect equipment reliability and performance.
