Walmart has pioneered the “big box” model of retail, with big box stores and even bigger warehouses to house its massive logistical operations. Now, Walmart has built its largest fulfillment center yet outside of Indianapolis. The center is the second of a whole new breed of fulfillment centers Walmart calls “next generation” facilities. These new facilities are purpose-built not only to serve Walmart stores but online sales as well. The newest fulfillment center is 2.2 million square feet. Ben Ames reports on the facility for DC Velocity:

Retail giant Walmart on Thursday opened the second of fourย planned โ€œnextย generation fulfillment centersโ€ that will achieve faster shipping and delivery times by aligning people,ย technology, and machine learning,ย the company said.

The McCordsville fulfillment center is a 2.2 million-square-foot facility located some 20 miles northeastย of Indianapolis. As well as increasing orderย fulfillment capacity for the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company to sell its own goods on Walmart.com, the site will also allow the company to expand its third party logistics (3PL) practices.

As the companyโ€™s largest fulfillmentย center to date, the building will support Walmartโ€™s end-to-end third-party fulfillment business,ย known as Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), and will provide space to fulfill goods sold onย Walmart Marketplace, the companyโ€™s e-commerce platform.

Walmart did not disclose exactly which logistics technologies it had installed in the new facility,ย but last year it said that its nextย generation fulfillment centersย would run on automation and robotics from Knapp,ย Symbotic, andย Witron.

When all four next generation fulfillment centers are online, Walmart says they will combine with the rest of its fulfillment network to enable the retailer to reach 95% of the U.S. population with next- or two-day shipping.

โ€œThe McCordsville grand opening marks a major milestone in our supply chain modernization journey,โ€ Karisa Sprague, senior vice president, Fulfillment Network Operations for Walmart U.S., said in a release. โ€œWith more customers shopping online, weโ€™re leverage state-of-the-art technology to increase speed of delivery all while creating tech-empowered career opportunities for our associates.โ€
