Did you invest in stocks in the 70s? Do you remember the 70s? Like they say about Woodstock, if you do, “you weren’t there, man!” Look at my chart below to see why it was so forgettable. Imagine retiring in the late 60s and spending your retirement years investing in stocks. Not much fun. But, if you went into retirement with a plan, there’s a good chance you could weather the storm by owning a mix of diversified assets. When I say plan, I mean preparing before retirement with answers to questions like: How much can I “afford” to spend? What kind of yield can I get on blue-chip … [Read more...]
Newport Folk Festival 2022: Surprise Appearances by Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell
For over six decades, the Newport Folk Festival has been a key point of Newport's summer festivities. There have been legendary performances given on its stage and memories made that last a lifetime. This year, Paul Simon made his Newport Folk Festival debut, joining Nathaniel Rateliff's American Tune Review to perform four songs, "Graceland," "American Tune," "The Boxer," and "Sound of Silence." According to StereoGum's James Rettig, "He was joined by Rhiannon Giddens on 'American Tune,' and a whole bunch of performers came out for 'The Boxer.' "What a joy working with Nathaniel and his … [Read more...]
How to Avoid Going Back to Work after Retirement
Where did all the workers go? In what’s being called the “Great Resignation,” there’s nothing great about it, especially for investors who thought they had “enough” to retire on. It’s a terrible situation to be in, not knowing when to “get back” in or how to invest with safety in mind. That’s why you need a plan well before times like these, because a failure to plan is a plan to fail. In my conversations with you, the first area we cover is risk. We talk about diversifying your portfolio with an eclectic mix of dividend payers and allocating for income/safety with bonds. We don’t use just … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: Clearing the Decks, Buying a Boat, Seeing the World and More
OK, some updates for you from Your Survival Guy to clear the decks. The new Grady White is in (engines too) and ready for delivery. It’s a Canyon 306 with twin Yamaha 300s. The name: Tom Sawyer. I’ll send you pics next week. Here’s how to buy a boat. Had lunch with clients yesterday here in Newport, RI overlooking the water on a beautiful June afternoon. We’ve been working together now for twenty years. Over that time, the relationship has expanded, through referrals, to six other relationships with their friends and family. If you feel someone you care about would like to talk with … [Read more...]
If You Have a Plan, I Believe You’ll Get to Where You Want to Go
When Your Survival Guy was 12-years old, my family traveled across the country in a 21-foot Winnebago Brave. Winnebago was on to something with the name because we saw the country all right, including the major national and state parks. But we also saw a lot of gas stations and even a few friends for an unexpected, extended stay in Cincinnati, OH. But that’s what’s great about RVing. You remember stuff you never planned on seeing. When we were “stuck” in Cincinnati, we went on a riverboat, played Wiffle ball, went to the club pool, and to the Kings Island amusement park where we rode “The … [Read more...]
See Your Survival Guy’s Super States on $1 a Day
You may remember last month when I wrote to you about my clients who traveled around the country, paying $1 a day to rent/move a Winnebago from the factory to a dealer in New York. They had three weeks to drive around in the meantime and made the most of it. Here’s a summary of their trip, and additional costs. You can’t see Your Survival Guy’s Super States for much less than this. 21 days Nashville Natchez Trace Parkway New Orleans Gulf Coast MS and AL Southern Georgia Okefenokee Swamp GA Savanna GA Charleston SC Friends in Richmond, VA Eastern Shore of … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Make Retirement an Unforgettable Adventure
Your Survival Guy had a couple of meetings at our Newport, RI office Monday. In the first one, we talked about the resilience of dividend-paying stocks in times like these and about a recent extended stay in Florida fishing and enjoying the outdoors. In the second one, we talked about the importance of dividends during inflationary times and their steady stream of income. They just got back from Capitol Reef National Park and said it’s their favorite one of all. You can check it out here. Action Line: Everyone deserves an unforgettable adventure, whether it's a perfect day in Capitol … [Read more...]
Surviving to Climb New Hampshire’s 4,000 Footers and More
In my conversations with you, you’re telling me how life throws you curveballs. Who would have thought you’d be navigating pre-retirement as a cancer survivor with one lung? But, you tell me, “that’s life.” What’s been on your mind is what you can do with it. Can you, for example, still hike like you used to? Can you still summit a 4,000-foot mountain? And so, that’s what we talked about earlier this fall as you planned your trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where 48 of the 4,000 footers reside, many in the Presidential range. If you’re familiar with the White Mountains, you … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Come Monday You Went to Work
Happy Monday. Who’s got your back in times like these when everyone’s making money, money, money? Let’s not forget when the music stops, not everyone’s going to have a chair. Like a broken record, there are always more investors than you’d expect who will be pushed to the floor. Happens every time. “It won’t happen to me,” is a common refrain. When I think about how hard most of you have worked to create what you have, I know come Monday, you got up and went to work. And the next week, same thing. Rinse, wash, repeat. That’s a lot of years and a lot of hours. Imagine having to do that all … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Snowbirds Can’t Wait to Get Back to Florida, Texas
After spending a winter in their northern homes, retirees who normally head south for the winter, known as Snow Birds, can't wait to get back into the sunshine. Clare Ansberry reports for The Wall Street Journal: A growing number of people, many now vaccinated, expect to head south for the winter despite the Delta variant spread. About 90% of the estimated 1 million snowbirds who travel annually from Canada, say they will head for warmer areas compared with 30% last year, assuming the land border reopens to nonessential travel later this month. Land border restrictions remain in place through … [Read more...]
