Did you catch the Sunday New York Times article on the supper clubs in Palm Beach? Look, Your Survival Guy loves Palm Beach, especially lunch at the Brazilian Court, but a supper club? Sounds expensive. But wait a second. When I started running the numbers, I thought, “Self, it could actually work.” That is, if it’s the right one. You don’t have to be an uber-wealthy billionaire to have a nice life. Look for more supper clubs to show up, especially away from super high tax states. Welcome to Florida. OK, you really can’t make up these headlines. Pension funds rethinking private equity … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy’s BEST Insider’s Guide to Key West
Happy Monday from New England. Your Survival Guy’s thin blood is adjusting to the cold, having just returned from a tropical island getaway to Key West. I’m here to report that the Conch Republic is alive and well. And notice it’s not a democracy. The Republic is where you go to get that neighborhood walkability without all the sensibilities. Tops on our list are lunches at Louie’s Backyard and the Thirsty Mermaid. Say hi to Patty at Louie’s and Ionela and Ava at Thirsty, and enjoy your cheeseburgers in paradise. Both are fab. And be sure to hit the waterfront at the Half Shell Raw Bar to … [Read more...]
Cash, Money, Green: How Will You Feel in Retirement?
How will you feel in retirement? Good question. I don’t know. And you don’t either. It’s one of those mysteries in life you don’t get to understand until you’re in it. You can do the mental math, make detailed spreadsheets, meet with CPAs, CFAs, or any other acronym out there, review glossy reports, and still be left without a clue if it will all work out. Will the sun come out tomorrow? When you’re working, at least you have some control. You get up every day for what seems like a lifetime, raise the kids, send ‘em off to college, and then it hits you. You think: “Self, do we have enough … [Read more...]
How Will YOU Feel in Retirement? Let Me Explain
OK. Here’s the deal. You don’t know how you’re going to feel in retirement. There I said it. Plain and simple. It’s an unknown, unknown. Sure, you think you’ll know how you’ll feel. But thinking is a whole lot different than living. Let me explain. Your Survival Guy spends hours each day talking with investors just like you. You tell me you’re feeling the pressure. You did your job. You raised your family. Now it’s a whole different ballgame. The truth is, once college is paid for and the kids are out of the house, the pressure cooker starts whistling. The force of the world comes … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: The Sound of Silence
With all this saving and investing, let’s not forget about living. Because once you have water, food, shelter, and a riverboat cruise through Europe, what’s the point? You want to get out there and see what you see. Go for a drive. Hit the trail. A couple of weeks ago, Becky and I were driving west on 302 through Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, on our way to ski Bretton Woods. It’s a steep, narrow pass with Mount Willard on your left. We could see a group picking their way up one slippery face of its ice falls. It’s serious terrain. Mt. Pierce is on your right. In speaking with you this … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Adventure Awaits
It's going to be a cold one today, especially at the summit of Mt. Washington, home of the world's worst weather. Here's your forecast: "As far as wind chill values, if we go with a milder and less gusty setup of 33F below and winds of 95 mph, summits will have values around 87F [degrees Fahrenheit] below," meteorologist Ryan Knapp of the Mount Washington Observatory said in a statement. "If we go with a colder, windy setup of 40F below and 110 mph, summits will have values around 101F [degrees Fahrenheit] below." With that in mind, it's good to see pics from your adventures in warmer … [Read more...]
You’ll Love This if You’re Dreaming of an Active Retirement Life
Originally posted January 15, 2020. My clients are ski bums. Well, not exactly, considering they own their own place in the Tetons. But rising before dawn, queuing up for the first tram, especially on powder days, is a ski bum’s life. That’s why it was no surprise to receive this email: Hi EJ! Snow over a hundred inches so far in 2020! Every day a powder day! Several more days for this storm cycle! We have been very happy with your care of our financials. Skiing has been fabulous. More powder tomorrow! Will give you a call when we come up for air! When they get home in … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Make a Plan to Be There
Happy September 1st from Your Survival Guy. It’s been quite a summer and it’s not over just yet, but it sure is starting to feel like it. Because the more serious season of fall with kids back in school and vacationers back to work is on the doorstep. In my conversation with you, you’re telling me about your epic summer trips, like golfing at Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI (yes, that Kohler), your time with the grandkids, swimming, gardening, and more. But you’re also telling me about your health and how you and your spouse are tackling an unwelcome development that is never what one … [Read more...]
Here’s Another Reason to Visit Your Survival Guy in Newport
By American standards, Newport is an old town. Since it was incorporated as a town in 1639, and later as a city in 1784, a lot has happened here. There's a range of impressive history, including the historic mansions built by America's titans of business, the Kennedy wedding, but also some intriguing history from the Revolutionary War and the post-war era that followed. Newport celebrates its history with a number of events each year, and one of those events that appeals to people interested in America's founding era is the annual reading of a letter from George Washington to the … [Read more...]

Look, this isn’t about me. It’s about you. I’m Your Survival Guy, not someone else’s—I’m all yours. I want you to succeed. I want you to live your dreams. And that doesn’t mean I want the other guys to fail. This isn’t about them. This isn’t a zero-sum game like trading stocks. This is about your success.
