Your Survival Guy survived a weeklong liver cleanse, and I’m here to write about it. OK, it was a five-day deal. I made it four and three-quarters. I can’t say I recommend it, but here I am, wondering how this week will go. So far, so good. Now I’m thinking about every little bite and sip I take. But hey, a little bit of self-reflection goes a long way. That’s the beauty of a reset. If you want to make time stand still, dear reader, and not let life pass you by, then do a liver cleanse. Talk about watching paint dry. Five days will feel like an eternity. All in the name of prolonging … [Read more...]
What Kind of Life Are You Investing For?
Dear investor, wouldn’t it be nice to forget it all and live without a care in the world? Ah, the good life. Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? But is it really that good? Living the good life isn’t necessarily a healthy one. Now let’s contrast “the” good life with “a” good one. Living “a” good life is hard. When you hear “John lived a good life,” you picture a different individual than when you hear “John, he lived the good life.” As an investor, you want to live a good life. Nice and steady. No crazy ups and downs that push you out of positions, forcing a sale. Because that’s what can … [Read more...]
America’s Super States and Stocks that Respect YOU
When you look at my Super States map, you instantly get a feel for where your freedom is better respected in one state vs. another. Yes, this is a competition. There’s a reason certain regions are more competitive than others. Look at the northeast, for example, a region where politicians always seem to be looking for what you can do for them rather than the other way around. It’s why my favored New Hampshire stands out as a beacon for freedom. And when the northeast is compared to, for example, Florida, it's night vs. day. Dear investor, look at the carnage in the tech industry with … [Read more...]
Forty Years Ago, Jogging a Mile a Day and Still Going
“Forty years ago. After getting out of bed, I jogged a mile on the streets of LA to make my 29-year-old self feel better,” begins Dan Shaugnessy, long-time sports columnist for The Boston Globe. “And I never stopped. One mile a day. A four-decade, slow-motion grind that has taken me more than 14,500 miles, across America and back — twice! Practically Gumpish.” You know Your Survival Guy is a big fan of compounding. Literally putting one foot in front of the other can create miracles for investors. I’m living proof of that. You don’t need to run a marathon a day to do it. Shaugnessy … [Read more...]
A Christmas Story: Rich Grandchild, Poor Grandchild
Originally posted December 18, 2020. In this most wonderful time of the year, you don’t need to break the bank to help a grandchild. Give the gift that keeps on giving—COMPOUND INTEREST—and let TIME do the heavy lifting. You don’t need to fill Santa’s sleigh with cash. Tuck a little into their stocking each year while sugar-plums dance in their heads using my favored Fidelity UGMA. Start early. It is the key. Because time is the magic that makes money fly. And yes, TIME is a double-edged sword. It goes by too quickly—and yet it turns hundreds into hundreds of thousands. Do what I … [Read more...]
Dividends are Vital. The Reason Why Is Compound Interest
Originally posted September 8, 2017. Why are dividends important? Because they allow the power of compound interest to work for you. I was speaking with a client yesterday who is in the process of helping his children establish Roth IRAs. I told him it’s amazing how just getting in the game can do wonders for one’s financial well-being: Imagine what this will look like in 50-years. Remember, just the process of starting an investment puts you or a loved one light years ahead of those bogged down and doing nothing at all. Take a look below at the power of compound interest. An investor … [Read more...]

FOCUS ON GROWTH: Avoid Income Redistribution on High Octane
When it comes to compound growth in your life it all comes down to you. Thankfully. You can’t count on any help from the government. Because rather than helping you grow, the leadership in Washington is relying on your money to do the heavy lifting for others. It’s income redistribution on high octane. What I want for you is a life built around compounding. What that means is not losing money or whatever it is you value. You need to keep building upon your foundation. That foundation needs to be rock solid. Action Line: Now is a great time to take inventory and look at areas where you … [Read more...]
SLOW AND STEADY: A Lesson in Self Reliance
In my conversations with you, you’re telling me about your food prep for the winter. You’re telling me how you’re boiling green beans and storing potatoes, how you’re drying garlic and canning tomatoes. Is there anything better than garlic and pasta with a crisp white wine or with tomato sauce and a red? Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? It’s all in preparation for winter—And it’s a lesson in self-reliance. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had the self-reliance skills of the Amish or our forefathers? In my conversations with you, you tell me how living in an old colonial home gives you the … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy’s Favorite Number is 72: Here’s Why
Your Survival Guy had the pleasure of attending a Babson College cocktail party last night at the New York Yacht Club here in Newport, RI. It was a beautiful night. The recent heat wave had broken the night before. The wind was light from the southeast, coming in over the trees, making Newport Harbor look so inviting for boaters with hardly a wave to be seen. Our son will be a freshman at Babson in a couple of weeks. When asked if he has any family members that attended Babson, he replied, “Yes, my grandfather, uncle, mom, and dad.” It's hard to believe Becky and I graduated in 1994. I … [Read more...]
