I want you to understand that stocks, like trees, don’t grow forever. Look at Apple stock. During the first trading day of 2022, Apple’s market cap surpassed $3 trillion. Did you know that on the same day with $3 trillion, you could have owned all of McDonald's, Walmart, AT&T, Philip Morris, Berkshire Hathaway, Proctor & Gamble, JP Morgan Chase, Starbucks, Boeing, Deere, and American Express combined? Does that mean Apple’s going down from here? Listen, I’m Your Survival Guy, not Johnny Appleseed. But here’s the deal. When you get older, you can’t afford to lose money (can you … [Read more...]

Well, it’s -23° at the top of Mt. Washington, NH this morning, with a windchill of -64°. At my cabin in Bartlett, it’s -5° with a windchill of -33°. Key West it is not. But even with this bitter cold snap, my favored Super State of New Hampshire is an island of freedom for New Englanders. Isn’t it time you found the freedom you deserve? Check out the Mt. Washington Observation Deck Weather Cam here. Your Survival Guy's 2022 Super States: #1 New Hampshire Coming in at number one on Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States ranking is New Hampshire. Why? Do you want to make decisions for your $2 million dollar portfolio based on the automated notifications coming across your mobile device? That's what UBS is hoping for, as they roll out digital advice to investors across the globe. Margot Patrick reports for The Wall Street Journal: UBS Group AG UBS +0.29% doubled profit in its U.S. wealth business over the past five years by wooing rich families with white-glove service. Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States: #1 New Hampshire
Coming in at number one on Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States ranking is New Hampshire. Why? For starters, it’s a beacon of freedom in New England. And its motto is “Live Free or Die.” What’s not to love? Because in times like these it’s your FREEDOM that matters most. Look at the island of freedom New Hampshire offers to New Englanders, and you see why it tops my list. Plus, it’s a great escape from any city, including Newport, from seasonal crowds. My family has been going to New Hampshire skiing for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, we’d go to King Ridge, where you parked … [Read more...]
This Isn’t the First Time the Fed Got Inflation Wrong
At the Financial Times, Frederic Mishkin explains how the Fed has gotten inflation so wrong, and that this isn't the first time. He writes: Three flaws in the Fed’s monetary policy framework have led to overly expansionary monetary policy. First, there has not been enough focus on demand shocks. The Fed has based its view that the inflation surge would be shortlived on the extensive negative supply shocks that Covid-19 has imposed on the economy. Although, negative supply shocks are surely one source of the surge in inflation, the Fed has not paid enough attention to very strong … [Read more...]
TOP HEAVY: Focus on Big Indexing Could Cause Market Chaos
Originally posted on December 14, 2021. In an excellent review of a festering problem in the market today, Randall Smith of The Wall Street Journal, outlines the $1.3 trillion Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTI), and the growing importance of the CRSP U.S. Total Market Index to the future of markets. What’s concerning to Your Survival Guy is that the top 10 companies of the CRSP U.S. Total Market Index comprise a quarter of its value. Does anyone remember the plight of the Nifty 50 in the 70s? When people fell out of love with the Fifty, the S&P crashed 48.2% from early … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States
Last year I brought you the first installment of my Super States. Now, Your Survival Guy is pleased to present the Super States of 2022. This year my focus is on promoting the states where your freedom is a top priority. Here on the map you see my Super States in green. States showing up in red are the … [Read more...]
TECH WRECK: NASDAQ Stocks Suffering
The mostly tech oriented stocks of the NASDAQ Composite Index have not been faring well. Nearly 40% are down 50% from their 52-week highs. Vildana Hajric reports on the carnage for Bloomberg, writing: Roughly four in every 10 companies on the Nasdaq Composite Index have seen their market values cut in half from their 52-week highs, while the majority of gauge members are mired in bear markets, according to Jason Goepfert, chief research officer at Sundial Capital Research. “Whatever the fundamental and macro considerations, there is no doubt that investors have been selling first and … [Read more...]
HUGE IMPLICATIONS: Market Sell OFF Sends a Message
The implications are HUGE from yesterday’s stock market sell-off. If you live in or around Boston or Newport, RI, this is ground zero right now for Covid-19, thanks to everyone seeming to have the Omicron sniffles. This is the last gasp for power. You can feel the surge to lock things down, BIG TIME. Pay attention to what I’m telling you. Because if you want to dine at the premier dining establishments, you better have your Vax card because they no longer accept just American Express. It’s “show me your papers” or “no soup for you.” And if you don’t like it. Too bad. No problem. They’ll … [Read more...]
