Well, Your Survival Guy made it to England after a seven-night Atlantic crossing on the QM2 from Brooklyn, NY, to South Hampton, just over two hours away from The Dorchester Hotel. What can I say about our voyage that you can’t already guess? It’s a long way on a big ship on a big ocean with plenty of fog, wind, and rain. There may have even been some sun and haze on one of the days. Starting out, it felt like it was going to be a long week, but as soon as you get into the pace of life aboard ship and of losing an hour a day for five of the seven days, you feel as if you’re going … [Read more...]

How One Chinese Company Is Navigating US EV Tariffs
Victor Reklaitis of MarketWatch reports that Polestar has been moving away from building its EVs in China, even before this month’s news about U.S. tariffs. Reklaitis writes: President Joe Biden’s new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles are widely viewed as not having much immediate impact, and that’s because such EVs aren’t widely sold in the U.S. China’s EVs are “rightly seen as a future threat,” but Biden’s tariffs on those vehicles and other key Chinese products are “more protective/symbolic than currently disruptive,” Wolfe Research analysts said in a note. There is one company … [Read more...]
Are Paper Wine Bottles the Future?
Saabira Chaudhuri of The Wall Street Journal reports that Pepsi, Procter & Gamble, and Diageo are among companies contending with how to keep drinks fizzy and products fresh while ensuring the bottles can be recycled. Chaudhuri writes: For more than a century, businesses have struggled to solve a curiously complicated challenge: How to make a paper bottle that doesn’t get soggy and keeps drinks fresh. Now they say they are the closest they have ever been. Diageo, Pernod Ricard and Procter & Gamble are among a raft of companies testing paper-bottle designs they are betting can … [Read more...]
Richard C. Young’s Intelligence Report: Beat Inertia
OK, imagine you have a pile of cash. What are you going to invest in today? What are your objectives with this money? Will you need it for the purchase of a home down the road? Or for living expenses? Are you in debt? These are just a few questions to get you thinking about investing your cash. As you know from Richard C. Young’s Intelligence Report, inertia is a mighty foe. You don’t want to be in the business of saying to yourself or, worse, to your spouse, “I should have done that.” By that time, it’s too late. On the flip side, once you’re invested and have set sail with your plan, … [Read more...]
IEA Lowers Oil-Demand Growth Forecast for 2024
Giulia Petroni of The Wall Street Journal reports that oil-demand growth is now seen at 1.1 million barrels a day from previous estimates of 1.2 million barrels a day, the Paris-based organization said in its latest monthly report. Petroni writes: The International Energy Agency cut its forecast for oil-demand growth this year as subdued industrial activity and mild winter temperatures reduced gasoil consumption across some of the world’s largest economies, particularly in Europe. Oil-demand growth is now seen at 1.1 million barrels a day from previously 1.2 million barrels a day, the … [Read more...]
Retail Sales Fall Below Economists’ Expectations
Greg Robb on MarketWatch reports sales jumped 3.1% at gas stations, which offset weakness in several sectors as retail sales came in below economists' expectations. Robb writes: The numbers: Retail sales were unchanged in April, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, as sales at gas stations offset weakness in cars and several other categories. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.4% gain. Sales rose 0.2% not including automobiles, in line with expectations. [...] Big picture: Consumers have pulled back some since the start of the year, but spending remains … [Read more...]
To Your Health: Are You Interested in French Wine?
Are you interested in Burgundy? Burgundy that doesn’t break the bank? In a world of haves and have-nots, I want you to be a have. Because enjoying great Burgundy doesn’t need to be too exclusive. You can find “value” if you seek it out. One of my go-to sources is Kermit Lynch. His team puts their boots on the ground or in this case on the terroir. I subscribe to his monthly newsletter and look forward to every issue and selection, not just the Burgundies. Another option, one that Your Survival Guy and Gal subscribe to, is Dry Farm Wines who’s seal of excellence reads: A peerless … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Rich Advisor, Poor Advisor
In my more than 25 years working as a fiduciary in the investment business, I’ve observed quite a few areas that separate the rich man from the poor man. One relates directly to the advisory business in what I’ll refer to as Your Survival Guy’s: Rich Advisor, Poor Advisor. I hope you know which one you work with or are planning to work with. You see, the Poor Advisor needs you. He needs you to meet his numbers, not yours. He needs you so he can make his monthly car lease payments, the mortgage payments on his McMansion, the golf and yacht club memberships, and the vacations he’s always on … [Read more...]
