Well, it’s -23° at the top of Mt. Washington, NH this morning, with a windchill of -64°. At my cabin in Bartlett, it’s -5° with a windchill of -33°. Key West it is not. But even with this bitter cold snap, my favored Super State of New Hampshire is an island of freedom for New Englanders. Isn’t it time you found the freedom you deserve? Check out the Mt. Washington Observation Deck Weather Cam here. Your Survival Guy's 2022 Super States: #1 New Hampshire Coming in at number one on Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States ranking is New Hampshire. Why? Timeless Investment Advice and Venison for the Winter
In my conversations with you, you’re telling me about your bow hunting expeditions this season. Yesterday I spoke with two of you about your recent hunts, and you told me you’re good to go for the winter. The freezer’s packed with meat. I guess it should be no surprise the large number of hunters in Your Survival Guy’s network. Like fishing, sometimes getting your catch home can be like The Old Man and the Sea, where one client found himself a long way from his ATV with a Pope and Young size buck. “I’m gonna need some help here,” he thought. Luckily his buddy was there. Mission … [Read more...]
HIGHER FEES: The Big Players Are Pushing ESG Investing
Happy Friday. What a week. Can’t help but feel excited for America because, as one client puts it, “Americans have been awoken by the woke.” Here’s what’s on your mind. The race for governor in New Jersey isn’t over. This one’s another stinker as votes seem to appear out of nowhere in the dead of night. News flash to Murphy: NJ’s oppressive taxes keep “residents” in Florida for six months and a day, not NJ. They’ve already decided that calling you their governor is bad for business. Let’s go DeSantis. Looking to get away? Zillow has got a house for you. All of a sudden, the “high … [Read more...]
Press Freedom in Hong Kong Threatened by Potential Alibaba Deal
Alibaba may soon make a deal to sell the South China Morning Post, one of the most powerful free news outlets in China. The deal could see a state-owned or state-backed entity buy the journal, limiting its ability to provide unbiased news. Bloomberg reports: A company owned by the Chinese government is working on an offer to acquire Hong Kong’s influential South China Morning Post, according to people familiar with the matter. Bauhinia Culture (Hong Kong) Holdings Ltd. is interested in a deal with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. that would see the city’s most prominent English-language … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: Simple Prepping for Winter Storms
You know how I feel about technology or algorithms taking over your portfolio. I’m sticking with the four-year-olds. Keep it simple. Sure, Your Survival Guy likes technology, but if I have to get stuff done fast, I write it down on some good ‘ole fashion paper. It’s mobile, it doesn’t need to be charged, and it doesn’t chirp at me when I’m trying to concentrate. Now then, Your Survival Guy has some experience with technological disasters. Take, for example, my most recent one, where there was black smoke rising from my boat. Turns out, a lightning strike hit the VHF antenna that ended up … [Read more...]
My Neighborhood Looks Like a Drone Strike Target
OK, Your Survival Guy’s writing to you this morning with the house power restored, but no internet service. Let me say, there’s some weakness in security with no internet when, for example, your property security cameras depend on Wi-Fi. (Note to self, when is security more important and necessary than when the you-know-what hits the fan?) And yesterday, stuff was flying around Newport, and it seriously felt like a hurricane at times. No exaggeration. The fierce winds even knocked out observation systems. The Newport Daily News reports: Thousands of New Englanders were without power early … [Read more...]
FORBES 400: One Bite Everybody Knows the Rules
You’re familiar with the phrase “One bite everybody knows the rules,” if you watch Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy’s pizza reviews. Fast forward from his days distributing flyers on the streets of Boston to today, where his media empire is worth hundreds of millions, if not billions. Portnoy connects with his followers. Portnoy’s frozen pizza, One Bite, is now carried by Walmart. If you want to get a feel for just how big Walmart is, check out the list of stores where you can pick up one of his frozen pies at the end of this piece. As an aside, we’re hearing a lot about the Forbes … [Read more...]
NOBODY WANTS TO WATCH JOE: TV Ratings Fall in Post-Trump Era
Apparently, Americans don't want to watch Joe Biden on TV. Ratings have fallen in the post-Trump years as Americans avoid television. The Financial Times' Anna Nicolaou and Caitlin Gilbert write: As the news cycle has calmed under Joe Biden’s presidency and the pandemic has eased, US media groups have suffered dramatic audience declines, with primetime ratings for cable television news networks CNN and MSNBC falling more than 50 per cent in the third quarter compared with a year ago. Last year’s cocktail of Donald Trump, a deadly pandemic, the US presidential election and historic racial … [Read more...]
Survival SUPER States: A Place to Call Home
When you can’t even send your kids or grandkids to public schools, you ask yourself, “What am I paying for?” When your local police force is gutted, you ask yourself, “What am I paying for?” When your politicians treat you like a piggy bank you ask yourself “What am I paying for?” This simple question is being asked at kitchen tables all over this country every single day. But it’s different this time, as big blue cities and states, usually the recipients of workers, are suffering from a once in a lifetime exodus to RED STATES. As retirees tell loved ones “Don’t worry we’ll be back to … [Read more...]
