Invest with Your Survival Guy and Don’t Miss the Boat in the New Year

December 30, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Your Survival Guy wants to work with you. If you’re not already a customer and have half a million in savings and investments, then you’re good to go. Half a million sounds like a lot, and it is, especially when it comes to trusting someone you’ve never met to handle it for you. But that’s not us. We know each other, or at least you know me from YourSurvivalGuy.com and my monthly letter to you, Survive and Thrive. (If you’re not already a subscriber, sign up here to get to know me better.) We all have some lazy cash hanging around doing nothing, just taking up space. Look, when banks are … [Read more...]

Short Sellers Celebrate 2022

December 30, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Originally posted December 14, 2022. Short-selling hedge funds are celebrating 2022 as falling stocks, tight money, and an energy crisis create prime opportunities for them. Laurence Fletcher reports for the Financial Times: “Recently we’ve been getting more absolute return from the short book,” said Chris Crawford, who runs a long-short hedge fund for Eric Sturdza Investments. “The reality is setting in for these companies,” he said, referring to unprofitable groups that investors rushed into during the bull market. Higher interest rates have ratcheted up the pressure on firms whose … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s 4 Ways to YOUR Wealth

December 29, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Originally posted September 15, 2022. Your Survival Guy’s four ways to your wealth are: Let your money hibernate Work for as long as you can You are most valuable Get your lazy cash off the couch Look, I want you to be a compounding machine. I’ve spent most of my life compounding money beginning with a passport savings account my dad helped my sister, and I set up at the local bank when we were kids. Back then, interest rates were something you could sink your teeth into, and if you kept the money invested long enough, you saw interest on interest work its magic. I … [Read more...]

How to Invest in Gold

December 29, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

How should you invest in gold? We explain how to invest in gold in seven different ways. We explain how to invest in gold coins or bars. How to invest in gold exchange traded funds (ETFs). How to invest in gold mining stocks and gold royalty stocks, and how to invest in gold futures. At Young Research, we have followed the gold market for over four decades. Young Research’s founder and Chairman, Richard C. Young even owned a small private gold company that specialized in Gold Pandas. To invest in gold back then, it was either gold mining stocks or gold coins for most. Today, … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Number One Recommendation in Times Like These

December 28, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Originally posted October 27, 2022. OK, what’s Your Survival Guy’s number one recommendation in times like these--when inflation is running hot and interest rates are going up? Well, it’s this: Don’t believe the hype. Inflation isn’t anything new, and interest rates need to be higher. But don’t bank on recommendations to play the market. That these two I’s are going higher is baked into the cake. That doesn’t mean they’ll be higher a year from now. You know Your Survival Guy doesn’t like playing the prediction game, especially when it’s hard enough to understand what’s really going on … [Read more...]

How Is the Economy?

December 28, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Originally posted December 5, 2022. The ISM Manufacturing index fell into contraction territory in November for the first time since 2020. The ISM index is a monthly survey of purchasing managers at more than 300 manufacturing firms. The index measures the change in manufacturing activity from month to month. Activity in housing, a large cyclical sector of the economy, has also turned down, and homebuilder sentiment is at recessionary levels. We are also seeing some weakness in advertising markets and softness in other sectors of the economy. The leading economic indicators which seek to … [Read more...]

Do You Have $500,000 in Savings? Avoid This Nightmare

December 27, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Originally posted August 2, 2022. Do you have $500,000 in savings? Is it working for you, or is it stuck in the summer doldrums taking up space in your house? Don't let another day go by without seriously considering a conversation with Your Survival Guy about putting your lazy cash to work. Look, there's a reason I'm writing to you, and that's to help you survive and thrive in all aspects of your life. But it's easy to let the money stuff sit around and do nothing. You can only read so much. At some point, you gotta do something. Inertia is the investor's worst nightmare. Take, for … [Read more...]

Vanguard’s Year-end Tax Surprise

December 27, 2022 By Jeremy Jones, CFA

Originally posted December 12, 2022. With bonds on pace to have their worst year on record and the broad-based stock indices that most professional investors follow down double digits YTD, one would think 2022 would be a non-event for capital gains taxes. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for many investors who own open-end mutual funds. Many open-end mutual funds are distributing substantial capital gains this year despite racking up significant losses for investors. Even Vanguard, arguably the most investor-friendly mutual fund shop, is saddling investors with substantial capital … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Investment Cave for the Winter

December 23, 2022 By E.J. Smith

Much of your investment success comes from avoiding disasters like crypto exchange FTX. The Fear of Missing Out or FOMO is a huge pull, like gravity, on investors. Look, I’m Your Survival Guy, not Superman, but FOMO’s like kryptonite. It saps the power of self-control and “knowing better” right out of investors, and it comes when you least expect it. If you’ve been with me, this has been a good year. But it’s been downright brutal for the non-dividend paying stocks that mainly comprise the Nasdaq and the tech sector within the S&P 500. The ride up is always more fun than the crash. But … [Read more...]
