After decades of pretty lenient enforcement, there are signals that the Department of Justice's antitrust cops could be getting serious. Stefania Palma reports in the Financial Times: The US Department of Justice has warned that it will seek to block more anti-competitive deals after Joe Biden’s administration pledged to crack down on companies exploiting their market power. Jonathan Kanter, in one of his first speeches as head of the justice department’s antitrust division, on Monday said his unit should, in most cases, seek to block tie-ups that were “likely to lessen competition” rather … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States: #1 New Hampshire
Coming in at number one on Your Survival Guy’s 2022 Super States ranking is New Hampshire. Why? For starters, it’s a beacon of freedom in New England. And its motto is “Live Free or Die.” What’s not to love? Because in times like these it’s your FREEDOM that matters most. The blacklist will target new companies in sensitive sectors that use so-called variable interest entities to run their China businesses, according to four people familiar with the matter. They did not … [Read more...]
Is Anti-Trust Finally Catching Up to Big Tech?
Through time, a small number of tech companies; Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc., have amassed much of the share of their respective markets. Regulators mostly gave them a pass as they acquired smaller rivals, but now those days may be over. Parmy Olson reports in Bloomberg: For years, Facebook and other large technology companies grew into vast digital conglomerates by making so-called killer acquisitions, small deals for companies that could one day pose a competitive threat. Internal emails between executives at Facebook show Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg and his … [Read more...]

NO BIG DEAL? Infrastructure Bill Could Be a Dud
With a life spread out over ten years, and a $550 price tag that pales in comparison to the spending spree politicians have been on for the last two years, the infrastructure bill passed by the Senate may not be that impactful. Paul Kiernan writes in The Wall Street Journal: WASHINGTON—The bipartisan infrastructure bill is unlikely to have a big impact on growth in the next few years, economists say. Longer term, though, investments in highways, ports and broadband could make the economy more efficient and productive. The short-term boost to growth will be relatively limited for two … [Read more...]
