In states where employees are forced by government to join unions, the dignity of citizens takes a backseat to power. Union bosses crave the money and power they derive from subjugating their forced members, and politicians enjoy the benefits of catering to the bosses by reaping campaign donations. With backing from their bought-and-paid-for politicians, union bosses believe they can act with impunity. An example of that behavior comes out of the International Association of Fire Fighters, where union bosses siphoned off pension money to their own accounts. The National Right to Work Committee … [Read more...]
Government Intervention Backfires Again
President Reagan had it right when he said over three decades ago that the nine most terrifying words in the English language are, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” What has the world learned since? Not much it would appear. Government intervention into the private market, in many cases, causes more harm than good. The ban on bank dividends in Europe may be the latest example. The FT has more: Back when the British government imposed colonial rule over India, its leaders wanted to cut down on the population of deadly cobras in Delhi. So the government offered a bounty for every … [Read more...]
Time to Privatize the Postal Service?
The United States Postal Service just reached an agreement to borrow $10 billion from the U.S. Treasury. The USPS is on an unsustainable track. Declines in first-class and marketing mail volumes are pointed to as the cause. Higher e-commerce deliveries that are more expensive to process are also cited as a culprit. The real problem here is there is no incentive to innovate or drive productivity and efficiency. Privatization via a concession with requirements for delivery set by the federal government looks like a sensible way forward. The Wall Street Journal's Paul Keirnan and Paul … [Read more...]
Is There No Escape from Big Labor?
Despite the perfectly clear decision made by the Supreme Court in Janus vs. AFSCME, unions are still trying to extract dues payments from unwilling participants in their extortion schemes. The National Right to Work Committee, which helped win the Janus case, tells the story of Ifeoma Nkemdi and Joanne Troesch who, are attempting to escape the grip of the Chicago Teachers Union. Here's the story: When the militant union bosses who run the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU/ AFT/AFL-CIO) ordered rank-and-file educators to go on strike last fall, many didn’t want to walk out on their … [Read more...]
Democrats About to Kill Virginians’ Right to Work
You have read my warnings of the impending push to eliminate the Right to Work in Virginia. First, you saw, Will Virginians Allow a Socialist to Take Away Their Right to Work? Then, you read that After VA Democrats Take Your Gun, They’ll Take Your Job. Now, Democrats are preparing to do just that. A bill has been passed in the House and is awaiting the Senate's approval that would adopt rules similar to New York's Taylor Law. Ken Girardin explains at The Wall Street Journal: Virginia Democrats are poised to legalize collective bargaining for government employees. In November Democrats … [Read more...]
Small Deals by Big Tech Coming Under Increasing Scrutiny from FTC
Federal Trade Commission regulators are taking a closer look at small deals by big tech companies that may have harmed competition. John D. McKinnon and Deepa Seetharaman report for The Wall Street Journal: Federal regulators opened a new front in their investigation of big tech companies, seeking to determine whether the industry’s giants acquired smaller rivals in ways that harmed competition, hurt consumers and evaded regulatory scrutiny. The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday ordered Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google owner Alphabet Inc. to provide … [Read more...]
Right to Work at Risk as VA Democrats Target Employee Freedoms
After taking control of the legislature and the governor's mansion in Virginia for the first time in decades, the state's Democrats are eager to undo all that has been done by Republicans during that time. Democrats' first target is gun control, but soon they could be coming for the employee freedoms protected by Virginia's right to work law. According to the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, Virginia's right to work laws were enacted in 1947, with major updates in 1954, and 1970. Now Democrats want to repeal the law that, as The Wall Street Journal reports, "made Northern … [Read more...]
Minimum Wage Hike is Why Long-Standing California Restaurants Are Closing
Restaurants in Sacramento are closing up shop citing the impending Jan 1, 2020 minimum wage hike in California. Some of these institutions have been in business for decades. The new hourly minimum wage will rise to $13. Compare California’s min wage to the “open for business” state of Utah. The Beehive state has a minimum wage of $7.50 and, guess what else—rising wages. When money is respected, good things happen. That is exactly what’s happening in rich states like Utah. Here's the story of one businessman being hurt by the minimum wage hikes from Fox … [Read more...]
Has Amazon Been Caught in an Anti-Trust Trap?
Regulators are looking hard at all of the major tech companies with an eye toward anti-trust violations. At Bloomberg, Spencer Soper reports that one particular Amazon practice may fall into that category. He writes: Amazon.com Inc.’s determination to offer shoppers the best deals is prompting merchants selling products on its marketplace to raise their prices on competing websites, a testament to the company’s growing influence over the e-commerce market. Amazon constantly scans rivals’ prices to see if they’re lower. When it discovers a product is cheaper on, say, Walmart.com, Amazon … [Read more...]
Is the Trump Administration Coming for Amazon?
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told interviewers at CNBC yesterday that "“If you look at Amazon, although there are certain benefits to it, it destroyed the retail industry across the United States, so there’s no question they’ve limited competition." The Secretary's words, coupled with recent Justice Department disclosures that there are "plans to scrutinize tech platforms following mounting criticism across Washington that the companies have become too big and too powerful," there is understandable worry at Amazon and other tech firms. Bloomberg's Ryan Beene reports on Amazon's … [Read more...]
