One client tells me his gun shop, once again, is seeing record sales. This time from the stimulus checks. The $1200 check is about the perfect amount for a new handgun or rifle and some ammo. At least some Americans are putting it to good use. Sales were already soaring as Americans, nervous about civil unrest caused by the coronavirus, purchased new firearms in droves. Many of these Americans were first-time buyers of guns. The Elko Daily Free Press reports: “Sales are definitely up,” said Bob Buckley, who owns Arms R Us in Spring Creek. “Delivery is probably the biggest problem at … [Read more...]
U.S. Intelligence Says China is Lying About its Coronavirus Numbers
According to sources in the U.S. intelligence community, China is lying about the number of cases and deaths the country has suffered from the COVID-19 coronavirus. It is easy to suspect funniness in China's COVID-19 reporting. Look for instance at the map of China's biggest cities below. There are 14 cities in China around the size of New York City, or larger. Among them, none but Wuhan come anywhere near the number of cases logged in The Big Apple. That's despite the virus reaching those cities before it came to NYC. (Quick note, the number of cases listed by each city is that of the … [Read more...]
Coronavirus Case Growth Update

Growth in cases in Italy continues to slow which offers hope for the U.S. and other countries still seeing too rapid case growth. South Korea’s numbers have ticked up, but still look under control. Coronavirus Stats Update: What’s the Latest?
By Jozsef Bagota @ Shutterstock.com Below are updated coronavirus stats through yesterday. The good news is, South Korea has continued to keep new case growth at a manageable level and there are signs Italy’s lockdown has slowed the growth in new cases. There is also reporting that Italy may only be testing the sickest patients which is good and bad. Bad because the growth numbers may be skewed, but good because it means the fatality rate of the virus in Italy would be much, much lower than is being reported. The other potentially good news in Italy is that recovered patients should … [Read more...]

Americans Flee the Big City Blues
According to the scholar Richard Florida, "the great urban revival is 'over.'" Americans are leaving "luxury" cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Joel Kotkin writes at New Geography: Since 2010, urban inner rings, including central business districts, accounted for barely 10 percent of population growth in the nation’s 53 largest metropolitan areas. More revealing still, the country’s three largest metropolitan areas — New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago—are now losing population. Since 2012, suburbs and exurbs, which have seven times as many people as the core, are again growing … [Read more...]
Remembering Bob Marley: Natural Mystic
It’s not every day you get to go to Jamaica. I remember going for Spring Break one year while studying at Babson. When you’re in Jamaica, you hear Bob Marley songs in the wind as if he’s playing somewhere off in the distance. A special surprise at the end of our trip was hearing his songs performed live by his son Ziggy to a huge crowd on the cliffs of Negril. Last week Bob Marley would have turned 75, and in a way, he will always be with us thanks to the reggae sound he created. In an interview with NPR, Ziggy explains that his father kept things light even when they visited him on … [Read more...]
Small, Affordable, Rural Living for Retirement
After decades of urbanization, Americans are beginning to rebel against the "bigger is better" mentality of city-living. Seeking a smaller, more affordable, sustainable, and secure lifestyle, some are venturing out from the mega-cities in search of a different life. A number of techniques have become popular in an effort to save, especially scaling down the size of one's home. Living small and saving big is even better when it's coupled with living in a state that treats you more like a human than an ATM machine it can withdraw money from. Carey L. Biron explains this trend at Thompson … [Read more...]
